Sessions has prioritized cracking down on cities that fail to comply with federal immigration authorities - called "sanctuary cities" - in his time as attorney general, following through on campaign promises and platforms President Trump made, as CBS News' Paula Reid has reported.
While visiting Sacramento this week, Attorney General Jeff Sessions vilified the state over three laws, accusing them of being unconstitutional and of interfering with federal immigration law.
Sessions said sanctuary laws "intentionally obstruct the work of our sworn immigration enforcement officers to intentionally use every power it has to undermine duly-established immigration law in America".
"California is using every power it has - and some it doesn't - to frustrate federal law enforcement".

The fate of immigration policy in California is increasingly in the hands of federal judges.
"You can sue us, you can talk about jailing us, you can threaten us, you can seek to intimidate us it doesn't matter", Steinberg said. "Now, the federal government ought to do its job and stop blaming California for its own inability to solve the problem, whether it's of crime or whether it's of immigration".
In his speech, Sessions praised the Trump administration's strong stance on enforcing immigration law.
Sessions strongly criticized Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf for her unusual public warning recently of an operation by federal immigration officers. Those who have outstanding orders of deportation, or who returned to the US after being deported, are subject to immediate removal from the country, said the agency in a press statement, adding that the remaining individuals are in ICE custody awaiting a hearing before an immigration judge, or pending travel arrangements for removal in the near future. Jerry Brown told reporters Wednesday. "Her actions support those who flout the law and boldly validates illegality", the attorney general said.
The lawsuit is also of note because it is the first to place a state against the Justice Department and the DOJ's ongoing behavior in regards to immigration. Brown declared the lawsuit "SAD!" in a Trump-like statement, while the Democrats running to replace him decried Sessions' move. On Wednesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions appeared in Sacramento, where he announced the lawsuit while expressing outrage in what can only be characterized as a lecture. "But it would be no different in principle from this new law enacted by California". "In California, we don't confuse coercion with cooperation". Sessions was hopping mad while echoing ICE Director Thomas Homan's previous accusations that Schaaf had given the heads up to 800 criminals who managed to avoid arrest.
