Nor'easter brings rare thundersnow to Northeast UPDATE 2-Travel snarled, power outages as storm bears down on US Northeast

The storm hit while thousands of residents remained in the dark from the "bomb cyclone" that blew through last week. The website said more than 2,100 flights had been delayed and 2,700 canceled, a lot of them in the Northeast, as of 8 p.m. EST (0100 GMT Thursday). Montville, New Jersey - about 32 miles (52 kilometers) northwest of Manhattan - got 26.8 inches, the National Weather Service said.

By Wednesday evening, the storm dumped snow at a rate of 2 or 3 inches and hour, with some places in New Jersey, New York and CT getting up to 16 inches so far.

Philadelphia got 6.1 inches, and Richboro, Pennsylvania, got 16, the weather service said.

Steve Marchillo, a finance director at the University of Connecticut's Hartford branch, said he enjoyed the sight of heavily snow-laden trees on his way into work Thursday but they also made him nervous.

Hundreds of thousands of homes in the Northeast were without electricity Thursday, a day after the region's second major storm in a week left at least one person dead and whipped the area with heavy snow and stiff winds, downing power lines and leaving precarious road conditions.

Schools in areas such as Hartford, Connecticut, and Boston were closed Thursday as transportation officials urged people to limit their driving so crews could treat and clear roads.

"Everyone should expect a long and challenging commute this evening", Baker said.

Wind gusts up to 60 mph were forecast on Cape Cod, 45 mph at the Jersey shore and 30 mph around suburban Philadelphia. While a far cry from the 90-mph gusts recorded over the weekend, the strong winds could impede efforts to restore power in the region.

Parts of northern New England faced another 18 inches of snow or more before the storm finally moves out Friday.

In New York, the town of Sloatsburg topped the list of most snowfall Wednesday night, with 26 inches within 24 hours, according to the National Weather Service.

"Customers who are still without power for days are rightfully frustrated", said New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy.

According to media reports, New York City was set to receive 8 to 12 inches of snowfall.

Some suburban areas more inland of the Northeast cities could see up to 2 feet of snow. Snow is expected to continue to fall through Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service explained that it infrequently occurs during a fierce snowstorm in a similar way to a thunderstorm with rain. Known as "thundersnow", it's snow paired with lightning and resulting thunder. It is an indication of the low, warmer air rising really fast into the sky, hitting the colder high air and falling swiftly as snow.

More than 500 flights - including at airports in New Jersey, New York, Boston and Philadelphia - were canceled by midday Thursday, according to FlightAware.
