Managing Editor Leeanna Ellis and Assistant Editor Teresa Hoffman debate. She jokes that I'll be late for my own funeral. DST supposedly would save energy and reduce reliance on oil imported from unfriendly nations in the Middle East because people returning home from work would not have to turn on their lights until sunset one hour later than standard time.

The company has been developing lights that automatically dim themselves based on the time of day, and which shift from a bluer light during day-time to a more orange light at night. People didn't like that kids were waiting for the bus each morning in the dark, and on October 27, the experiment with year-round daylight saving ended early and standard time returned. Newspapers were deluged by letter writers complaining that daylight saving upset astronomical data and made almanacs useless, prevented Americans from enjoying the freshest early morning air, and even browned out lawns unaccustomed to so much daylight.

It's changed over the years, too.

Rising groggily in the first days of adjustment to the time change can be challenging for all of us, but especially for children. In 2007, Daylight Saving Time was extended by four weeks. The only states not observing daylight time are Hawaii and Arizona except for the latter's Navajo reservations, which do.

Pedestrians should also be mindful about safety and should prepare for darker morning hours. When it's cold and dreary, no one wants to be outside.

William Willett first proposed changing clocks in England in 1908, but Germany, seeking to save on energy costs during World War I, was the first country to enact the practice in 1915, followed by the USA and other nations in 1918. Meanwhile, the first 7 p.m. sunset wouldn't happen until May 1 (as opposed to early March, when we "spring forward").

Controlling the lights: To both induce sleep in the evening and increase alertness in the morning, dim bedroom lights and putting electronics to sleep about 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime. Is this all really necessary?

Daylight Saving Time Starts Sunday. Here's What Losing An Hour of Sleep Really Does to Your Body

While you're only losing an hour in Daylight Saving Time this weekend, a biological clock and Circadian rhythm scientist at Texas A&M University said you could be feeling the effects of the change for much longer.

Also, for nearly half the school year thousands more children would go to school in the dark. I mean, isn't it bad enough we have to put up with cold weather, but we have to do it in the dark?

A CBS News poll a few years back (in February 2015) found that 23% of adults would prefer to have Daylight Saving Time year round, 23% would prefer Standard Time the full year, and 48% prefer to switch back and forth between the two.

I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Come Sunday, half the clocks in my house - those that have been off by an hour since November - will display the correct time.

The Uniform Time Act of 1966 addressed that challenge by synchronizing the switch dates across the country.
