Welbeck's brace helps Arsenal overcome Southampton 3-2 at Emirate

Danny Welbeck scored twice as Arsenal withstood a spirited performance from relegation-threatened Southampton to clinch a 3-2 Premier League victory at the Emirates. It was the Ireland striker's second league goal of the season and his first since January 2.

The reigning champions now trail Tottenham and Liverpool by 10 points with just six games left to salvage a place in the Champions League next season.

But in the Arsenal vs Southampton match Welbeck had the last word by heading in the victor moments after he had missed a much easier chance.

Hart was needed, though, to salvage a point for the visitors as he made brilliant stops from Marcos Alonso and Olivier Giroud in the closing stages to do his hopes of starting for England at the World Cup no harm.

"I thought there'd be another opportunity to get a goal and get the victor".

It is just one win in 19 league matches now and they have conceded six goals in two league games since Hughes replaced the sacked Mauricio Pellegrino in the middle of March.

"I thought I would get another opportunity to get a victor and I kept focused on that".

Jack Stephens was sent off in stoppage time for the Saints after shoving Wilshere to the ground in an off the ball incident while Mohamed Elneny also got red carded moments later for an off-the-ball incident as the game turned sour.

In Sunday's other league game, Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez scored minutes after coming on as a substitute to earn West Ham a 1-1 draw at Chelsea in their London derby.

The opening stemmed from an error from Shkodran Mustafi, who was an accident waiting to happen in the heart of Arsenal's defence, and Southampton's reward arrived in the 17th minute.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was brought back in and found the back of the net for the sixth time in seven games, with Alex Iwobi also coming into the attack and registering a attractive assist for the third goal.

Welbeck put the hosts ahead as he collected Alex Iwobi's slide-rule pass before cutting inside and seeing his shot deflect in off the heel of Maya Yoshida.

Long had the ball in the net again early in the second half, deflecting in a long-range effort from Cedric, but the forward was marginally offside.

Second half substitute Charlie Austin made an immediate impact as he came off the bench to draw Southampton level on 73 minutes but Welbeck nodded in the victor nine minutes from time.

When Welbeck somehow contrived to scoop the ball over the bar from three yards soon after, Arsenal supporters must have feared their chance to win the game had gone.
