Zuckerberg sees more censorship in Facebook's future

Senate Committee To Question Facebook CEO About Privacy Scandal How to watch Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testify before the Senate today
Kim Reese | 11 April, 2018, 17:13

Not so fast, the much-older senators told Mr Zuckerberg, 33, who was perched atop a seat pillow for the much-anticipated hearing into whether and how the breach affected the 2016 elections. The billionaire's clarification was in response to a question asked by Senator Gary Peters. "And our goals are to understand Facebook's impact on upcoming elections - like Brazil, India, Mexico and the U.S. midterms - and to inform our future product and policy decisions", Facebook said in a statement. As part of that agreement, Facebook promised to not share information about its users with third parties without the users' affirmative consent. Politicians often chew the scenery with long-winded, self-serving wind-ups, but Zuckerberg was peppered with some fairly pointed questions that got to the heart of the issue. "If Facebook and other online companies will not or can not stop the privacy invasions, then we are going to have to - we, the Congress".

"How do you sustain a business model in which users don't pay for your service?" Sen.

"We made it very clear this is how it worked", Zuckerberg said during his testimony at a hearing on Capitol Hill. And the enormous complexity of the social network he created at times defeated the attempts of legislators to hammer him on Facebook's specific failures and how to fix them.

Zuckerberg began his two-day hearing as his organisation faces charges of failing to prevent Cambridge Analytica, the data-mining firm affiliated with Donald Trump's presidential campaign, from gathering personal information from over 80 million users to try to influence election. It's not enough to just build tools. It's not enough to give people a voice.

Germany is still clueless about the motive behind deadly van crash into people drinking outside a popular bar in Muenster. Armed cops swooped on the scene just after 3pm local time and warned people to stay away from "inner city areas".

As Mark Zuckerberg attempted to answer hundreds of questions thrown at him by U.S. lawmakers, the internet was trying to make sense of a rather unusual prop he was using during the grilling.

The US Federal Trade Commission is investigating whether Facebook violated an agreement it signed with the agency in 2011 by its actions in the Cambridge Analytica scandal. "I started Facebook, I run it, and I'm responsible for what happens here", Zuckerberg told congress on Tuesday (local time). You know that and I know that. Pressed repeatedly by Democratic Senator Ed Markey to endorse a proposed law that would require companies to get people's permission before sharing personal information, Zuckerberg agreed to further talks.

Zuckerberg said Facebook is now going through "a broader philosophical shift in how we approach our responsibility as a company", and added that the company needed to take a "more proactive role". It speaks to the responsibility that Facebook has historically felt regarding policing content on its platform - or, more accurately, the lack thereof.

Zuckerberg replied that Facebook was working on it, citing various steps in vogue to tackle hate speech in Myanmar. Before then, "the system basically worked as its was designed", he said.
