Missiles, drones from Yemen 'intercepted' over Saudi Arabia

Arab News to become first Saudi 'gender-balanced' newspaper by 2020 UPDATE 1-Yemen's Houthis say launched drone attack on Saudi Aramco facility

The Saudi Arabian-led coalition announced Wednesday that its air defense systems have intercepted Houthi missiles launched toward the capital Riyadh, as residents of the capital posted on social media their accounts of hearing a loud explosion and seeing smoke in the sky.

One of the drones was targeting the Abha worldwide airport in Asir province, which led to a temporary suspension of air traffic, and a second was approaching a "civilian object" in Jizan province, he said.

This comes hours after Yemen's Houthi rebel group announced that they had launched drone rocket strikes against Saudi Arabia, according to an update on their al-Masirah news channel.

In recent months, the rebels launched missiles aimed at Riyadh, and dozens have been fired at southern Saudi cities that border Yemen.

The channel did not provide any details on casualties of damage from the alleged attack, however Saudi authorities said its facilities in Jizan were operating "normally and safely" following the Houthis' announcement.

Rahul leads Congress fast against BJP; calls Modi 'anti-Dalit'
As the photographs went viral on social media, senior BJP leader Harish Khurana tweeted, "Wow, look at these Congress leaders". Another party spokesperson, G V L Narasimha Rao, termed the protest a farce done in the name of Dalit welfare.

A video on the TV station's Twitter page said the ballistic missile was sent by the mainly Shia Islamic Houthi rebel movement in Yemen, which is fighting the Saudi-backed Yemeni government.

The Houthis claimed attacks on Abha airport and Saudi Aramco, located in Jizan, via Al Masirah, publishing an infographic of the "Qasef 1" drone.

The company is building a 400,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Jizan, part of a new economic city on the Red Sea, which is expected to become fully operational in 2019.

The arms monitor Conflict Armament Research says it has evidence that the drones used on Wednesday and other Houthi kit was made in Iran and was not of indigenous design and construction "in contrast to Houthi statements".

The Saudi-led coalition - which includes the UAE - intervened in the Yemen war in 2015 at the request of Yemeni President Abdrabu Mansur Hadi.
