Uber moves beyond ride-hailing with new partnerships

An exact timeline for the fleet expansion is unknown.

Uber chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi revealed the plans during a visit to Washington where he said the ride-hailing pioneer would seek a more diversified model that offers users various transport options including auto rentals on a partner peer-to-peer service. "We called drivers "partners", but didn't always act like it", said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, in a blog post revealing the new app that was published on Tuesday, March 10.

Experts agree that the latest move is part of a larger effort to expand the business beyond the usual ride-hailing service. On April 9, the company said it had purchased Jump Bikes, a provider of dockless electric bicycles.

Biking advocates and transit wonks tend to agree.

Jump won't appear in the traditional carousel of Uber options such as UberPOOL and UberX; Riders can access the Jump map by selecting the "Bike" option in Uber's menu. Jump bikes cost $2 per 30-minute ride.

These driver partners have also gone on strike on a number of occasions, complaining against reduced incentives and unfriendly policies. Uber Rent will be introduced in San Francisco later this month, with a wider US rollout expected throughout the year.

In a partnership with car-share startup Getaround, Uber Rent connects users to nearby cars through the Uber app. These cars are randomly parked around cities and can be rented on the spot.

Volkswagen to replace HR chief with Gunnar Kilian: Spiegel
It is unclear how soon Diess, a former BMW BMWG.DE executive who joined VW in July 2015 and has clashed with the company's labour leaders, might replace Mueller.

The station reported the law firm hired by Brock is hoping to get $25 to $50 million from Uber in the case, although the lawsuit says he is seeking unspecified damages.

The company has certainly invested a lot of time and resources in this project by now to simply just walk away from it all particularly when self-driving cars will have the core role in Uber's ride-hailing service which will operate a fleet of autonomous cars.

It's part of the company's larger vision. "If this goes on, you'll simply have gridlock".

It wasn't Uber's first collision in Arizona. San Francisco-based Getaround lets users find and instantly book vehicles from private auto owners, all through a mobile app. (Some have questioned such models, arguing that autonomous vehicles take up just as much space as private, manually operated cars - and cheap, driverless rides would only induce more congestion).

Users of the Uber app will now be able to book train or bus tickets in a number of cities.

The new Uber driver app comes with an "Earnings tracker" that let drivers know how much they earned on their last trip, making it easy to track progress.
