Azerbaijan's snap elections on 11 April 2018 ended predictably, with preliminary data showing incumbent Ilham Aliyev has taken the presidency once again.

Head of Yasamal District Executive Authority Aziz Azizov briefed the president on the carried out work.

Particular attention was paid to the organization of the sixth meeting of the Council of Presidents of Ukraine and Azerbaijan as part of the Azerbaijani leader's expected visit to Ukraine.

The election commission said turnout was about 75 percent and there were no complaints about irregularities.

"According to exit polls results, 80 to 85 percent of voters have voted for Aliyev, which means that Ilham Aliyev has won the election", he said.

In conclusion, the Head of State wished the fraternal people of Azerbaijan peace and prosperity.

Robert Kraft Said He Wants to Free Meek Mill
Critics say the sentence was unfairly harsh and indicative of a system in need of deep reform. Meek Mill was arrested in 2007 on drug and weapon violations and went to jail.

The main opposition parties in the tightly controlled Caucasus nation boycotted the vote, calling the elections a sham and accusing the authorities of electoral fraud.

Aliyev was first elected in October 2003, two months before the death of his father, Heydar Aliyev, who ruled for 10 years. "We suppose that in the next seven years, Azerbaijan will be developing and strengthening under the leadership of Ilham Aliyev".

The presidential election that had been due in the fall was moved up to April.

Critics believe that the seven opponents that were allowed to run in the contest-the CEC did not accept the applications of seven other, better-known opposition politicians-are in essence puppets affiliated with Aliyev and the government.

Highly restrictive laws related to the media challenge the freedoms of expression and the press, and extend also to website and social media content. Defamation is a criminal offense, punishable by imprisonment and with additional penalties for defamation of the president, further limiting the freedom of expression key to political campaigning, the observers said.
