The for-profit social media giant Facebook harvests vast amounts of data from each of its 2 billion users across the globe. Ever since the scandal came to light in February, Facebook has been having a tough time dealing with accusations that the company was responsible for the leak of personal data of millions of users.

While some were trying to engage with the finer points of Facebook's business model, many elder statesmen - particularly in the Senate, where the average age is 62 - appeared to have an extremely tenuous grasp of social media in general, leading critics to compare Zuckerberg's testimony to a tech support session. He didn't mention whether those other apps included Facebook's own Messenger, as well as Instagram and WhatsApp, which are also both owned by Facebook. "The whistle was just blown but they were corrected 18 months ago, I don't think there is a need for a mad rush for businesses locally and in the region to stop advertising on Facebook because we haven't seen that reflected in how Barbadians are using the platform", he explained.

"So the average for non-Facebook platforms is 1,500", the congressman said.

Phocuswright analyst Mark Blutstein said some users might leave Facebook as a result, but the only way to measure that will be looking at average daily and monthly users when the company releases quarterly financial information in the future. The GDPR, aimed at bringing stronger data protection and more data privacy for citizens of the European Union, also has implications for USA firms that have a presence there.

Sarnecki suggests users to disable any apps on Facebook that they no longer use or trust by going to "Settings", and then "Apps and Websites".

Do you really think Facebook is private?

The wholesale, planet-wide exploitation of personal data has dark implications, Tufekci said: "We could enter into a phase of "surveillance authoritarianism, ' where we don't face (George Orwell's) '1984" model, where there's open totalitarianism, where we're dragged off in the middle of the night".

Passing that data to Cambridge Analytica and another party violated Facebook's rules, and Facebook last month announced it had suspended the parties involved.

So you think that you're pretty smart because you never signed up for a Facebook account. "The way to think about it is if you are not paying for something, you are the product". I probably post more than some but a lot less than others. "The limits of your right to privacy and how much you give away in modern America in the name of 'connecting people around the world'". "I'm hoping that the good that comes out of this is they are going to take their own security and the data they have in their own companies more seriously".

Instead, his and his staff's recent conversations with Facebook employees have been business as usual - little more than routine discussions about "pulling data" to better target ads, he said.

Prodded by the Cambridge scandal, the FTC is now investigating whether Facebook violated their agreement. How are we protecting our data? "This would apply to other services beyond Facebook because, as mentioned, it is standard to how the internet works".

The company reiterated that it's committed to launching this program as part of its efforts to effectively uncover potential abuse of people's information.

The app was used as a "personality quiz", and was created by an academic, Dr Aleksandr Kogan, working at Cambridge University's Psychometric Centre. It has pointed out practices of companies like YouTube and Google, apart from Facebook, that are potentially harmful to children.
