Foreign Ministers pose for a group picture during the preparatory meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers ahead of the 28th Summit of the Arab League in Riyadh on April 12, 2018.

Speaking at the summit, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi voiced "grave concern" at the military escalation in Syria, calling for an "international transparent investigation" into the alleged use of banned chemical weapons there.

"We stress our absolute condemnation of the use of chemical weapons against the sisterly Syrian people and we demand an independent worldwide investigation to guarantee the application of global law to everyone proven to use chemical weapons", the group said in a statement.

Iran has always been a supporter of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and backs Lebanon's Shia Hizbollah movement, whose fighters are deployed in Syria alongside regime forces.

The last Arab summit was held in Jordan past year.

The conflict could be ended through a two-state solution that guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with the July 1967 borders and East Al-Quds as its capital, the declaration says.

Riyadh expressed its support for the strikes on Damascus in a statement on Saturday.

The 29th Arab League summit kicks off in the Saudi city of Dhahran on Sunday amid several challenges facing the Arab world, mainly in Syria, Yemen and Palestine, in addition to Iranian and Turkish interference.

On December 6, 2017, Trump announced his official recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and instructed the relocation of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to the disputed holy city, which promptly triggered fury and condemnation throughout the Arab world.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain - all members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) - and Egypt cut diplomatic ties with Doha on June 5, 2017, and imposed a land, sea and air embargo, accusing it of supporting "terrorism".

The summit also issued the "Dhahran Declaration" which brought the viewpoint of the Arab leaders on the issues related to the region.

Al-Jubeir, Saudi foreign minister, said Qatar was not on the agenda because "it's not a big issue". It's not a big problem.

Iran has said that the Arab League should take steps towards helping restore stability in the region instead of repeating its lies and baseless allegations against Tehran.

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit said Assad's government and "international players trying to achieve their own strategic political goals" bear responsibility for the crisis there.
