Pence repeatedly praised the "strong leadership" of President Donald Trump and American allies in responding to the chemical attacks in Syria.

A global chemical warfare watchdog group says its fact-finding mission to Syria will go ahead even after the USA -led airstrikes.

The Nafta trade agreement could be renegotiated in the next few weeks, US Vice President Mike Pence and Canada's Prime Minister said yesterday in Peru, avoiding new political opposition that could emerge during Congressional and Mexican elections later this year.

Pence said that the United States acted on information from the intelligence community and allies, and they had a high degree of confidence that 'at a minimum, ' chlorine was used in the attack, and possibly sarin.

For his part, Pence thanked Canada for backing the strikes and echoed Trump, British Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron in saying Syria's chemical-weapons facilities had been "degraded and crippled".

USA negotiators discussing changes to the North American Free Trade Agreement also recently floated the idea that 40 percent of automotive production must occur in areas paying wages of between $16 to $19 per hour.

"The goal of this meeting is not only to address the issue of NAFTA, but also to talk about the bilateral relationship, which should continue to be based on cooperation and mutual respect", Pena Nieto said.

The meeting comes amid tensions between Trump and Mexico over immigration and the president's calls for a border wall.

President Trump reportedly tried to block Vice President Pence's national security adviser pick because he previously worked on anti-Trump ads for a conservative group.

The meeting with Pence was announced on Friday and follows Trump's push to deploy National Guard troops to the U.S. -Mexico border to fight illegal immigration and drug smuggling.

'I think President Pena Nieto understands that he and President Trump have a difference of opinion on that, ' he said.

Trudeau expressed optimism that the three neighbors could reach an agreement on a renegotiated NAFTA, telling Pence there was "positive momentum" in the talks. The conference brought together leaders of more than 30 countries. Pence then attended a banquet hosted by Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra.
