Madrid needed to find a way to stay alive in the Champions League against Juventus and it did with a determined performance that culminated with Ronaldo's injury-time penalty in a 3-1 loss that was just enough for a 4-3 aggregate win.

Madrid had won 3-0 in the first leg in Turin last week, when Ronaldo scored one of his two goals with an wonderful overhead kick.

The tongue-in-cheek inference is that Michael Oliver - the English referee who awarded the late penalty and send of Gigi Buffon - was not qualified to officiate the match.

Ronaldo showed great composure to fire the ball past substitute Wojciech Szczesny - who had replaced Gianluigi Buffon after he was sent off for protesting the decision - to secure a 4-3 aggregate victory.

The penalty came as Vazquez was in position to score in front of the goal after Ronaldo headed down a cross into the area.

Real Madrid will be the semi-finals for the eighth successive time.

In dramatic fashion, Real Madrid saved themselves from an embarrassing collapse - and probably saved Zinedine Zidane's job.

The Los Blancos were struggling to book their place into the semi-finals of the Champions League after visitor's Juventus scored three goals in a space of sixty minutes to cancel out the three away goals they conceded in Turin.

"Everyone can decide what they want, if it's a penalty or not".

Juventus was attacking relentlessly and the tie was heading towards extra time when the entire flow of the game changed and the Bernabeu side was given a penalty upon Mehdi Benatia's challenge on Lucas Vázquez. The referee blew the whistle and you can't change that. "We did not play well, we must admit it, and it should be a lesson for the future", he said.

Juventus took advantage of Madrid's depleted defense, which was without suspended captain Sergio Ramos and had 21-year-old Jesus Vallejo playing alongside Raphael Varane.

AS admitted the European champions went from "the panic to the semi-finals", while Marca simply believed: "It was a penalty".

Real, Champions League winners in three of the past four seasons, came into the second leg leading 3-0, helped by Ronaldo's stunning bicycle kick.

"The pulse increased, but I calmed down, and I knew I'd be decisive", he continued. "We could've scored five or six goals tonight, so we ought to be proud".
