"Nothing has happened with ZTE except as it pertains to the larger trade deal", Trump tweeted Wednesday, singling out The Washington Post and CNN for their coverage.

Trump previously indicated the U.S. would roll back recently imposed sanctions on ZTE, the second-largest telecom equipment maker in China.

The Trump administration has yet to reveal any details of trade talks expected this week between a delegation led by Chinese Vice-Premier Liu He, the top economic adviser to President Xi Jinping, and senior Trump administration officials.

The moves against waste imports have thrown the American recycling industry into a tailspin as China was one of the most important destinations for United States trash.

Some US lawmakers have alleged equipment made by ZTE and other Chinese companies could pose a cybersecurity threat.

The ban effectively crippled the company.

ZTE said last week that it halted its main operations after the Trump administration banned American companies from selling it vital components. "Stay tuned!" Trump tweeted on Tuesday.

A group of 33 Democratic senators signed a letter urging Trump to instead focus on strategies to change China's trade practices, such as eliminating market-distorting subsidies and forced technology transfers. "They will use a ZTE phone to spy on any American company and steal their intellectual property". "In return China removes tariffs on USA farmers who did no wrong".

Europe, Iran seek to save nuclear deal after U.S. exit
Mogherini said it had been a "very productive" meeting but indicated it was the start of a long road. Zarif said the latest U.S. decision was "illegal".

Trump's "comments about ZTE sound an alarm bell for counterintelligence, cyber security, & red, white and blue jobs", Wyden tweeted Tuesday.

In retaliation to that China threatened to impose a 25% tariff on $50 billion worth of U.S. exports. "In my view, giving sanctions relief to ZTE is a big mistake".

"I hope the administration does not move forward on this supposed deal I keep reading about", US Senator Marco Rubio said.

U.S. companies are estimated to provide 25 percent to 30 percent of components used in ZTE's equipment, which includes smartphones and gear to build telecommunications networks.

But ZTE has also always been the target of scrutiny for regulators and officials in the United States, which is wary of its ties to the Chinese government.

"Our position has been that's an enforcement action, separate from trade", Ross said Monday.

Trump's remarks followed an AFP report last week that a Chinese state enterprise was pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into an Indonesian real estate development linked to the American president's business empire, prompting questions of possible quid-pro-quo for ZTE.

During an interview on CNN's "New Day" on Wednesday, the IL representative responded to Trump's tweets supporting the Chinese company amid speculation that the president is seeking a closer alliance with China for cooperation on North Korea and other foreign policy issues. They have been making hundreds of billions of dollars a year from the U.S., for many years.
