The daughter of a yak herder, Ms Lhakpa worked as a porter and kitchen hand on trekking and mountaineering expeditions, before becoming a climber herself.

This year, her climb was sponsored by the outfitter Black Diamond, who provided gear and monetary support.

A total of 94 foreign climbers and Sherpas made it to the top of Everest on Wednesday alone.

Research by the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development shows that the Khumbu glacier is retreating at an average of 65 feet per year, raising the risk of avalanche.

He and his team started their expedition on Tuesday evening. "There are no reported injuries".
