Why we care whether everyone heard 'laurel' or 'yanny'

Looking at the spectrogram, it seems to be somewhere between "Yanny" and "Laurel", so in a way, it is an ambiguous sound.

The two words mesh well enough to be combined into one recording. Vocabulary.com previously worked with about eight professional opera singers to record every word in English over a six month period because they are fluent in International Phonetic Alphabet, Tinkler said.

Some people who listen to this audio file hear one thing; others hear something completely different. "All of those play into whether you hear Yanny or Laurel". "It's just as much of a fierce debate in my office as it is anywhere else", he said.

On The Late Show on Tuesday, Stephen Colbert suggested that the audio clip was "the song of summer", and danced to it playing on repeat.

The answer to why people hear it differently may come down to their brains.

Richmond added: "It's an interesting example of how people's ears are different, and that your hearing changes over time, with the most common thing being that is, as people age, they lose high frequency response". Noah said. "We just need President Trump to tell us what he heard and then everyone will know what they think".

That's right. The question comes from an audio clip which you've probably heard coming out of a speaker or phone in the past couple days.

The recording apparently originated on Reddit. When he heard the clip from someone else's computer, he heard "yanny". She said she heard laurel.

Patricia Keating, a linguistics professor and the director of the phonetics lab at UCLA, said: "It depends on what part (what frequency range) of the signal you attend to".
