Zuckerberg to meet European Union officials - dodging public grilling

Another Facebook data leak exposed information of 3 million people Cambridge Analytica whistleblower warns of 'new Cold War' online

The EU and British parliaments have been calling for Zuckerberg to submit to an on-air grilling since it emerged this year that a company, political consultants Cambridge Analytica, had been allowed to misuse the data of millions of Facebook users.

Mark Zuckerberg has agreed to meet senior members of the European Parliament to discuss Facebook's use of personal data.

"The founder and CEO of Facebook has accepted our invitation and will be in Brussels as soon as possible, hopefully already next week", Antonio Tajani, president of the European Parliament, said in a statement on Wednesday.

That suggests he will avoid an uncomfortable public appearance and instead meet only with the legislature's top brass behind closed doors. And several of the USA lawmakers often appeared to fail to grasp the technical details of Facebook's operations and data privacy.

The European Union's new General Data Protection Regulation will be enforced from May 25.

The Times said it was unclear whether the probe was linked to the one led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation to tip the presidential election toward the Republican. The GDPR requires companies like Facebook to be more transparent about how users' data is used and gives them more consent over its use. "It must be a public hearing - why not a Facebook Live", he asked in a Tweet.

Zuckerberg will also make a stop in Paris to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron during his European trip. United States investors have sought to speak with banks that have handled the company's business, the Times said, citing an American official and others familiar with the investigation as saying that the probe appears to focus on CA's finances and how it obtained and used personal data from Facebook.

The world's largest social network has come under scrutiny over the way it handles personal data after revelations that British consultancy Cambridge Analytica, which worked on Donald Trump's 2016 presidential election campaign, improperly accessed the Facebook data of 87 million users.
