"I've seen some article that have talked about this becoming a Mount St. Helens and that will never happen".

Lava bubbling to the surface on Hawaii's Big Island is the hottest and most fluid it's been since Kilauea erupted four weeks ago - measuring at least 1,652 degrees Fahrenheit with no upper limit in sight, a volcanologist with the USGS warned Thursday.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority has chose to focus on two target contributors to the Hawaii market, the United States and Japan.

"The lava continues to flow and may reach other wells and areas of the Puna facility", Ormat said in a statement on Monday.

In a statement from Mufi Hannemann of the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association, he says, "Given how the Big Island is being portrayed through the media globally, it is no surprise that we are seeing a decrease in travel and hotel reservations". The Civil Defense Agency warned it could cause injury if it got in residents' eyes or was breathed in.

Lava from one fissure created fountains Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning that reached over 200 feet (61 meters).

"Persons in violation of this order are subject to arrest and will be liable for any costs associated with rescue operations in the mandatory evacuation area", the county said on its website.

Officials said the lava destroyed the electric utility's equipment on the highway which led to power losses at the Vacationland and Kapoho Beach lots.

In Hawaii's East Rift Zone, where Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens are located, "additional ground cracking and outbreaks of lava in the area of the active fissures are possible", the USGS said.

Meanwhile, back on Hawaii's Big Island, Pahoa residents were told Tuesday to be on the lookout for Pele's hair - sharp, thin strands of volcanic glass fibers. Firefighters also had to lead a man from his home near Kilauea late on Sunday after he was trapped by fast-moving lava, Hawaii News Now reported.

On top of all that, the USGS said ash was still erupting intermittently from Kilauea's summit.

There were several small earthquakes at Kilauea's summit Wednesday, where the vent inside the volcano's Halemaumau Crater has grown along with a series of explosive eruptions that have sent rock and ash thousands of feet into the sky.

It is unclear how many homes and businesses were without power.

Besides spouting fountains of lava around the clock, the fissures have released high levels of toxic sulfur dioxide gas on a near constant basis, posing an ongoing health hazard. If the cracks on Highway 130 would become larger or lava flows would cut off this road, the Chain of Craters Road would be the evacuation road for around 1000 people living in Kalapana southwest of the now active fissure system.
