Xiaomi’s new Mi 8 flagship looks identical to the iPhone X
01 June, 2018, 20:58
Xiaomi has launched a plethora of smartphones/gadgets in China on the 31st of June, including the Xiaomi Mi 8, Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer's edition, Xiaomi Mi 8 SE, Xiaomi-Oculus VR headset and the Mi Band 3. The Mi 8 actually has many selling points: high RAM, large storage, dual-frequency Global Positioning System, and AI-powered camera. The top variant of the Mi 8, dubbed the "Explorer Edition", presumably due to its transparent glass back, even lifted wholesale Apple's animated emojis (animojis). The rear cameras include 2x optical zoom, dual pixel phase detection autofocus and dual-LED flash.
One argument is that the Snapdragon 845 processor can't be in that position. It's an 18.7:9 aspect ratio panel with a great 88.5 percent screen-to-body ratio. Xiaomi says the front camera has some pixel-binning secret sauce that can team four pixels together to create a larger 1.8-µm pixel for enhanced clarity in low-light scenarios.
There's also a 12-megapixel dual camera setup on the back, with iPhone X-style AI-powered portrait mode and "Studio Lighting" effects.
The Explorer Edition will have only one variant with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage. The pressure sensing baked into the Synaptics sensor turns on the actual reader in order to save power. There's also a sleep tracking feature onboard that should be able to give you basic stats on your sleep quality.
The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 comes with a replaceable silicone band, and you will need to take it out of that strap when it needs to be charged, though luckily, you won't have to do that for quite some time, as it sports a black and white display yet again, as was the case with the Mi Band 2. The Xiaomi Mi Band 3availability in India and other markets has not yet been announced. It also runs on the all-new Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor we wrote about last week. That's because the handset has a series of sensors within its notch that's very similar to those of the iPhone X, making it the first Android phone to offer real 3D facial recognition as biometric security, as opposed to the simpler, less secure "2D" version of face unlock offered by the likes of the OnePlus 6 or Huawei P20 Pro.
The China Developer ROM closed beta will come to the Mi 8, Mi Mix 2S, Mi Mix 2, Mi Mix, Mi 6X, Mi 6, MI 5, Mi Note 2, Redmi S2 and Redmi Note 5 from June 1.
Besides security, the 3D infrared camera is used for...an Animoji clone. The company said it will offer MIUI 10 for a number of existing models, but didn't say what version of Android is churning beneath that custom skin. Of course, like all three devices, it features a notch.
