In a separate filing, the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY did not oppose Avenatti's admission into the case, which follows the Federal Bureau of Investigation raids on Cohen's home, office, and hotel room last month.

"Sooner rather than later that is going to have to be teed-up", he told Wood.

"When you get into it, you realize how much time it takes", said Alan Futerfas, who represents the Trump Organization, referring to Cohen's team's work.

Wood also heard from Cohen's legal team about the progress it was making on reviewing materials seized from Cohen's office, residence and hotel room in an Federal Bureau of Investigation raid last month.

Jones also reported having received additional electronic data over the past two weeks, including "electronic data from a video recorder, two computers, and mobile storage devices", which "includes various video, electronic communications and documents as well as data typically associated with computer usage".

Wood set June 15 as the deadline for Cohen's team to finish its review of the material, over Cohen's legal team's objections.

Avenatti withdrew his request for inclusion after the hearing had ended.

Judge Kimba Wood warned Avenatti, who has frequently discussed the Cohen case on TV and social media, that if he joined the proceedings he would have to shrink his media profile.

Avenatti would have to stop claiming publicly that Cohen is guilty so as not to taint a potential jury, Wood said.

Trump administration will fingerprint child migrants' parents
The president implied that children were being separated from their parents at the border because of a law enacted by Democrats. While this photo may not be from the time of Trump's presidency, the discourse surrounding immigration has been tense.

Cohen looked exhausted Wednesday, elbows resting on the table in front of him and head cocked slightly back.

After the hearing, Avenatti told reporters he believes Ryan confirmed the existence of audio recordings relating to Daniels.

"He's now just admitted, and he tripped himself up, he's just admitted that, in fact, Michael Cohen represented him in connection with the Stormy Daniels situation", he said of the president's comment.

Ryan at one point seemed critical of what he called "a very unusual thing going on" between prosecutors and Avenatti, who claimed he had a good working relationship with the government lawyers and that he knew the lawyers and the Federal Bureau of Investigation had not leaked the audio. Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, is suing Trump in order to void a non-disclosure agreement about an alleged affair with the president. This material, she said, would be turned over to Cohen's team as soon as possible. Jones said she was set to receive 1 million more files from three of Cohen's cellphones and had already reviewed nearly 300,000 files.

"Lawerence, this is pathetic", Avenatti said.

Trump has repeatedly denied any collusion, and Russian Federation has denied meddling in the US election.

Matching Avenatti's flare for the dramatic, Ryan noted that he's never opposed a motion of this nature in his 37 years of practice, but he did so on Wednesday because of Avenatti's "intentional, malicious, and prejudicial release of information" which amounted to a "drive-by shooting" of his client.

Cohen's attorney Stephen Ryan slammed Avenatti's television appearances and tweets about about Cohen and Trump, saying the California lawyer, who needs court permission to participate in a New York-based lawsuit, was "seeking the aggrandizement of a single attorney and his client". The firm has said the transaction had nothing to do with Vekselberg. The judge ruled Wednesday that Cohen's attorneys' review of the materials must be concluded by June 15, or the remaining materials will be sent to a group of lawyers not connected to the case.
