US President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un sign documents after the summit meeting.

Pompeo tweeted shortly after the summit ended Tuesday that he'd telephoned South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono.

The summit saw Trump and Kim share a historic handshake but critics say the love-in between the two was further evidence that Trump was helping legitimise the North Korean leader on the world stage.

After the historic summit today between U.S. president Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, there's one clear victor: China.

Many North Korea watchers have noted that the Singapore summit agreement lacks substance, despite Trump touting it as "very comprehensive".

Current and former U.S. defence officials expressed concern at the possibility that the United States would unilaterally halt military exercises without an explicit concession from North Korea that lowers the threat from Pyongyang.

"The Korean War never ended, it was a cease-fire and now we have a chance to put that conflict to bed". Several analysts cast doubt on how effective the agreement would prove to be in the long run at getting North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.

His announcement was a surprise even to President Moon Jae-in's government in Seoul, which worked in recent months to help bring about the Trump-Kim summit.

"I think it's gonna be really successful, and I think we will have a terrific relationship, I have no doubt", Trump said.

Before getting on a plane headed back to the U.S., Trump held an hour-long press conference with the gathered worldwide media, describing his hopes for the impact of the summit.

With Trump, however, Rodman said, things changed because he understood that people of North Korea have a heart and a soul.

Pressed during a news conference about North Korea's brutal rule, including the killings of Kim's uncle and half-brother and the malnutrition of its people, Trump reiterated that he thinks the 34-year-old dictator is "talented".

The United States and the DPRK commit to hold follow-on negotiations, led by the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and a relevant high-level DPRK official, at the earliest possible date, to implement the outcomes of the US-DPRK summit. Kim called the sit-down a "good prelude for peace" and Trump pledged that "working together we will get it taken care of".
