Apple and Samsung agree settlement in seven-year-long battle

The Apple vs Samsung iPhone-copying lawsuit is finally over Apple and Samsung Settle Patent Infringement Lawsuit

Seven years after the two technology giants took each other to court, Apple and Samsung have officially ended their dispute.

That document, filed with the Northern District Court of California, confirmed that the Apple and Samsung would "settle their remaining claims and counterclaims in this matter".

"Whereas the court has been advised by the parties that the above-entitled action has been settled, all remaining claims and counterclaims in this case are hereby dismissed with prejudice", US District Court Judge Lucy Koh wrote.

This particular dispute has been going on since 2011 when Apple sued Samsung.

We're grateful to the jury for their service and pleased they agree that Samsung should pay for copying our products.

England are likely to make a number of changes for their final Group G match against Belgium in Kaliningrad. That is the reality, we have put ourselves in this situation, we wanted to qualify and we have done that.

Terms of the accord weren't immediately disclosed. Apple had originally been granted more than $1bn in damages from its South Korean nemesis, having convinced the courts in a 2012 ruling that Samsung had infringed on its distinctive iPhone design with various Galaxy handsets.

Despite their legal issues, both Apple and Samsung are still the global leaders in term of smartphone sales, though Chinese phone makers Huawei and OPPO have begun to eat into Samsung's market share recently. "This case has always been about more than money". "We believe deeply in the value of design, and our teams work tirelessly to create innovative products that delight our customers", Apple wrote.

After appeals and trials, this $1.05 billion amount was reduced, and Samsung agreed to pay some damages.

Samsung had previously paid Apple $399 million to compensate for patent infringement. The settlement follows a damages retrial in which Apple won a US$539-million jury award in May.

In 2012, a United States jury awarded California-based Apple $1.05bn in damages for the copied features, which included design elements like the screen that displays icons in a grid.
