Brazil sealed their quarter-final place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Monday as they dispatched Mexico 2-0 at the Samara Arena in Russian Federation.

Brazil star Neymar was yet again at his acting best during his team's World Cup last 16 match against Mexico in Samara.

Both sides had early chances as Brazil keeper Alisson punched a cross straight to Hirving Lozano, whose shot was blocked by Miranda.

After they conceded the goal, while they still kept on fighting, they never seemed to be in a position to equalise, even with Guillermo Ochoa denying the Brazilians a second goal until the final stages.

It was proving a tough afternoon in Samara for El Tri, but there were a few spells that made them treacherous, such as a half-shot from outside the box by Carlos Vela.

More than 16,000 had RSVP-ed on Facebook for the " Families Belong Together " march, and Daley Plaza began filling up by 10 a.m. People across many major towns and cities in the USA had been urged to gather under the slogan #familiesbelongtogether.

Otherwise Brazil are unchanged, Manchester City striker Gabriel leading their attack in front of Willian, Philippe Coutinho and Neymar.

Not that the switch slowed down the five-time world champions, though, with Coutinho nearly breaking the deadlock three minutes into the second half with a well-struck effort that Ochoa was forced to beat clear to safety. "I told him, and he knows, about the price he's had to pay to get back to this level", said Tite.

Paulinho nearly doubled the lead before the hour, but his shot inside the box was kept out by the excellent Ochoa, who then had to tip Willian's fizzing drive over the bar. Writhing in agony after his right ankle was stepped on by Miguel Layun, Neymar managed to get back on his feet.

Tite's men are yet to hit full stride at Russian Federation 2018, and on this evidence they still have more to come, but Neymar's 51st-minute goal and Firmino's tap-in after coming off the bench means the tournament favourites progressed with relative comfort in the end, and avoided the early exit that has already befallen the likes of Spain, Germany and Argentina.
