Third-parties may read your Google Mail emails if you allow it

Software Developers are Scanning the Inboxes of Gmail Users App developers have been reading your Gmail, and it's alarmingly common

Almost every major email provider allows developers to access inboxes of their users, so it isn't surprising that Google is doing the same.

The Wall Street Journal spoke to a number of companies that said they had read people's emails.

Google "does little to police those developers, who train their computers - and, in some cases, employees - to read their users' emails", the Journal reported. Some allow people to write emails in special fonts, or to make it easier to find images to send to others, while others make it easier for people to organise their emails into folders.

Normally, computers scan and analyse over 100 million emails per day, but Google allows third-party software to electronically scan the inboxes of millions of Gmail users. You are not permitted to access, aggregate, or analyze Google user data if the data will be displayed, sold, or otherwise distributed to a third party conducting surveillance.

This might be somewhat confusing to some people, as Google stated previous year that it would stop using computer algorithms to scan your email for personalization data.

Some Gmail users may be shocked when they realize that humans may have read their emails on Gmail.

The report said a former officer for eDataSource Inc. said that having employees read someone else's emails is "common practice" for data collectors. All the top tech companies are under pressure in the United States and in Europe to do more to protect user privacy and to be more transparent about any parties with access to people's data.

Mikael Berner, the CEO of Edison Software, a Gmail developer that offers a mobile app for organising email, told The Journal that its employees had read emails from hundreds of Gmail users as part of an effort to build a new feature. The same executives admitting Google's laissez-faire attitude also fingered other email providers like Microsoft and Yahoo as equally culpable, making us wonder just how hypocritical the Redmond giant's "Scroogled" campaign may have been.

It said Gmail users could visit the Security Check-up page to see which apps they had linked to their account, and revoke any they no longer wanted to share data with.

The app companies say that their actions are covered by their user agreements.
