Aged 44, Therese Patricia Okoumou managed to scale the base structure of the statue around 3.30 p.m. and was taken in by the police after three hours.

This still image taken from video Courtesy of PIX11 News in NY, shows police talking to a woman who climbed to the base of the Statue of Liberty in NY on July 4, 2018.

The activists said the climber was not a member of their group.

A group that organized a protest at the statue earlier Wednesday says she also took part in unfurling a banner at the statue's pedestal.

Jay Walker, an organizer with Rise and Resist which opposes the Trump administration's policies, aaid the other demonstrators had no idea Okoumou would make the ascent, which wasn't part of the planned protest.

Liberty Island was evacuated Wednesday as a woman was arrested for trying to scale the iconic Statue of Liberty to protest President Trump.

Television images showed two officers in climbing harnesses and helmets grabbing the woman as she reclined near the upturned right foot of the giant statue. The ordeal lasted roughly four hours.

Those who were arrested had dropped a banner that read "Abolish ICE" from the statue's base, a reference to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to media reports.

Okoumou, who has reportedly had encounters with law enforcement during prior politically charged protests, was ultimately removed from the statue, arrested, and charged with federal trespassing and disorderly conduct.

Okoumou is expected to appear in a Manhatten federal court on Thursday, the New York Times reports.

Rise and Resist said it was working to get legal representation for Okoumou.

The National Park Service evacuated more than 4,000 visitors off Liberty Island as a precaution.

Police say Okoumou was protesting immigrant children being separated from parents at US Mexico border. If she does not come down of her own accord, officers will be required to repel down the monument to remove her.

A woman was spotted scaling the statue, and had made it to Lady Liberty's midsection, US Park Police public information officer Sgt. Dave Somma told NBC 4.

"I would have said let's get some nets, we'll wait 'til she....just get some nets", he said.

Police say the woman is a protester. He said federal rules do not allow banners to hang at the monument, which is run by the park service.
