Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said: "This is a means to divide the people of the country".
Assam is the first Indian state where the NRC is being updated after 1951, with March 24, 1971 as the cut-off date, to include names of "genuine Indian citizens".
According to the tripartite accords signed in 1985 between All Assam Students' Union, and Assam and central governments, those who registered themselves as Indian citizens in the state on or before August 24, 1971, will be considered the Indian nationals. "Our people have died here, but we will not leave this place".
"People, whose names have not figured in NRC, need not worry". On the other had, BJP supporters could argue that the exercise cannot be considered partisan as it was the Supreme Court that had ordered the government to identify illegal immigrants.
The tea-rich state of Assam has always been the center of social and communal tensions with locals campaigning against illegal immigrants, a fight that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist-led government has championed.

The demand for NRC wasthere for many years and the list which has been published today is not thefinal list.
In 2015, the Supreme Court directed the government to update the NRC in a time-bound manner under the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules 2003. Such people will have to apply in prescribed forms in their respective Sewa Kendras. The updating process involved house-to-house verification that involved verification of the documents provided, verification of the family tree to ensure claims of parenthood and linkages are not false.
About four million people saw their names were missing from the final draft of the list that was published by the Registrar General of India on Monday. The applicants have to refer to their 21-digit Application Receipt Number (ARN). The first list of the NRC process was released in December 31 past year, in which around 1.9 crore people out of the total applications of 3.29 crore people were included. Out of a total of 3.29 crore people, 2,89,83,677 (two crore eighty nine lakh, eighty three thousand six hundred and seventy seven) people have been found eligible to be included in the National Register of Citizens.
