6.4 magnitude earthquake leaves 3 dead at popular Indonesian island of Lombok

A 6.4-magnitude quake rocked West Nusa Tenggara province early Sunday, leaving no fewer than 14 people dead, including one Malaysian, 162 others injured and over 1,000 houses and buildings destroyed.

The remains of Malaysian climber Siti Nur Ismawida Ismail, 30, who perished during the recent natural disaster on the Indonesian island of Lombok, will be repatriated home tomorrow, according to news portal Astro Awani.

The epicentre of the quake was 50km (30 miles) northeast of Lombok's main city Mataram, the United States Geological Survey said, far from the main tourist spots on the south and west of the island.

More than 500 climbers including 21 from Malaysia are reportedly still stranded on the volcanic Mount Rinjani in East Lombok.

He said as of 4 pm, two groups of Malaysian tourists (groups climbing Mount Rinjani in East Lombok Timur) had been given appropriate assistance by the Indonesian authorities.

Videos given to CNN by a Thai trekking group, Trekmania, who were on Rinjani when the natural disaster struck show enormous clouds of dust covering the slopes of the mountain, triggered by the landslides.

Earthquakes are common in Indonesia, which is located on the seismically active "Ring of Fire" that surrounds the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

In 2004, a devastating magnitude 9.3 undersea natural disaster off the coast of the western Indonesian island of Sumatra triggered tsunamis.
