Several U.S. states said on Monday that they would jointly sue the Trump administration in a last-ditch effort to block the public from being able to download blueprints for 3-D printable guns.

The controversy centers on Defense Distributed, a firm that began publishing gun designs in 2013, but was told to stop soon thereafter by the US State Department. By Sunday 1,000 people had downloaded 3D printer plans for the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. Ferguson said in a statement Monday.

The guns produced on 3D printers are made nearly entirely out of ABS plastic, the same material used to make Lego bricks.

Democratic Party attorney generals of Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Washington and the District of Columbia have joined the petition, to be filed in federal court.

Cody Wilson, founder of Defense Distributed, is well aware of the effects this settlement will have on gun control: "The age of the downloadable gun formally begins", boasts the company's website.

No coercive action will be taken against anyone, hence there is no need for anyone to panic, says Rajnath Singh . The demand for NRC wasthere for many years and the list which has been published today is not thefinal list.

Wilson has sued local officials in New Jersey and California who threatened legal action against Defense Distributed if online gun blueprints were made available in their jurisdictions.

Wilson had sued the USA government in 2015 after being ordered by State Department officials to take down a series of designs he posted for a 3-D printed pistol, dubbed "The Liberator". Separately, attorneys general in 21 states urged Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Monday to withdraw from the settlement with Defense Distributed, saying it "creates an imminent risk to public safety". Wilson claimed the government had violated his First Amendment right to free speech, but federal courts hadn't appeared sympathetic to his case, and as recently as April the State Department seemed willing to continue litigating. Once these untraceable guns are on our streets and in our schools, we can never get them back. The Commonwealth applied for a temporary restraining order and preliminary and permanent injunction to prevent Defense Distributed from making any 3D printable firearms available over the Internet.

The Commonwealth's lawsuit alleges violations of the Pennsylvania Uniform Firearms Act of 1995 and the Federal Gun Control Act of 1968, as well as Pennsylvania's Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law.

They asked a federal judge in Seattle to block the State Department change in regulation that allowed Defense Distributed to go forward, arguing it permits criminals unfettered access to guns and "literally nullifies" state gun regulations.

Wilson was quick to hail the move as step toward victory in his broader campaign to sabotage US gun control efforts. If you want your Second Amendment online.
