A second guard fatally shot the polar bear after it attacked a guard assigned to protect tourists from the MS Bremen cruise ship on Svalbard's northernmost island, German cruise company Hapag-Lloyd Cruises said, according to the BBC.

A man in his 40's suffered head injuries after he was attacked by a polar bear but there has been outrage on social media against the killing of the animal.

The long-running cruise company said they had travelled to the destination for many years and were "very aware of its responsibility when travelling in environmentally-sensitive areas and respects all nature and wildlife".

The victim, in his forties, was given first aid at the scene of the attack yesterday... The probe will include an examination of the polar bear.

The incident occurred when the four-person polar bear guard team, who are always on board for these expedition cruises as required by law, prepared for a shore leave.

The animal was killed after attacking a cruise ship guard on Norway's Svalbard archipelago, which lies within the Artic Circle, according to the Joint Rescue Coordination for Northern Norway. He is out of danger, with no threat to life.

Svalbard is a wilderness of glaciers and ice caps that lies between Norway and the North Pole. A Longyearbyen port schedule showed that 18 cruise ships will be docking at the Arctic port in the next week.

The statement explains that in preparing to take a group of visitors ashore in Spitzbergen - a Norwegian archipelago - an advance group of polar guards are sent ashore without passengers. In 2008 polar bears were listed for protection under the Endangered Species Act because of forecasted impacts of climate change. "Usually there are also a few polar bears remaining in the area over the summer".

Another posted: "So - at a time when polar bears are hungry, when there is no sea ice, you put yourself in the middle of its dinner plate and are surprised by its reaction and shoot the bear? Horribly, horribly wrong", one Twitter user wrote.
