He has pleaded not guilty to those charges.

Given the strength of the evidence, however, some legal experts have suggested Manafort may be banking on an eventual pardon from Trump, who has called his former campaign chairman a "nice guy" who has been treated unfairly.

Prosecutors are expected to say that his life of luxury did not match what he had declared on his tax returns.

Gates worked as Manafort's deputy when he was chairman of the Trump campaign.

As a lobbyist, he developed a reputation for representing the unrepresentable, including former Philippine strongman Ferdinand Marcos, who was accused of torturing, abducting and killing thousands of opponents. Investigators have since looked into possible links between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

It was argued that Mueller was out of bounds in prosecuting Manafort as part of the Russia Investigation. At the same time, the Republican Party changed the language in its manifesto regarding the conflict in Ukraine, removing anti-Russian sentiment.

One potential witness was even told to be cautious when speaking of Manafort's NY residence - he owns a condominium in Trump Tower in midtown Manhattan, sources told ABC News. Or will special counsel Robert Mueller be handed a defeat in his team's first trial since his appointment more than a year ago?

Court papers allege that he "generated tens of millions of dollars in income" from his work in Ukraine and "engaged in a scheme to hide income from United States authorities".

When Yanukovych fled to Russia, Manafort and his business partner Richard Gates experienced a severe cash crunch, and the men allegedly began leveraging real estate to take out new loans, providing false or incomplete profit and loss statements and other data to banks. He has since been co-operating with the investigation into Mr Manafort.

Met Office forecaster Steven Keates said: "The outlook for the next 30 days is more of the same". Some areas will see a more than 10C drop between Friday and Saturday, he added.

"The documents establish the breadth of the work that Manafort performed, including commissioning television ads, writing speeches and carrying on campaign-related activities", read the filing, Bloomberg states.

On the surface, the criminal charges against Manafort - tax evasion, failure to report foreign bank accounts and fraudulently obtaining bank loans - are unrelated to the core of Mueller's investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

Soon after, Mueller's office brought new charges against Manafort, adding counts of obstruction of justice and conspiracy to his case in the District of Columbia.

Lawyers for the special counsel have, however, said that "the government does not intend to present at trial evidence or argument concerning collusion with the Russian government".

On the eve of his Virginia trial, it appears former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his legal team are starting to cut their losses. They claim that the executive, who was not identified by prosecutors in court documents, had approved Manafort's allegedly fraudulent applications for $16 million in loans while also seeking Manafort's help with securing roles on the Trump campaign and in the Trump administration.

President Donald Trump listens during a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte in the East Room of the White House, July 30, 2018. "He has a right to consider it", Mr Giuliani told Reuters.

In her ruling, federal Judge Amy Berman Jackson told Manafort to pursue his grievances against Mueller during his criminal proceedings.

Trump reacted to Manafort's jailing in June by describing it as "very unfair".
