Later on Sunday, Mnangagwa said in a video posted on Facebook that Chamisa had "forged a deal" with Mugabe and that a vote for the opposition leader amounted to an endorsement of the old order.

"Winning resoundingly... We now have results from the majority of the over 10 000 polling stations".

Zimbabwe's rival presidential candidates both claimed Tuesday they were heading for election victory, setting up a tense count in the country's first vote since the ouster of longtime ruler Robert Mugabe.

Initial observations suggest a high turnout in the first election of the post-Mugabe era, with president and ruling party candidate Emmerson Mnangagwa and opposition coalition leader Nelson Chamisa considered the front runners.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, accused of engineering flawed election wins for Mugabe in the past, has said this vote will be free and fair.

Electoral officials said turnout at Monday's vote averaged 75 percent.

Officials on Tuesday counted votes a day after millions of Zimbabweans peacefully cast their votes in a process closely watched by global monitors, who have yet to announce whether the election was free and fair.

In Harare, 32-year-old finance graduate Tinashe Dongo said he wanted "change" following Monday's vote.

"There are shortcomings that we have to check". The bloc will deliver a report on the conduct of the election on Wednesday.

With 5.6 million registered voters, the results of the presidential, parliamentary and local elections are due by August 4. If no presidential candidate wins 50 per cent of the vote, a runoff will be held September 8.

Mugabe, who fought in the war against British colonial rule, won elections in 1980 when Zimbabwe became independent and ruled until his sudden ejection last November.

"This country is enjoying democratic space which has never been experienced before", Mnangagwa said after casting his vote.

Mnangagwa voted with his family in his hometown of Kwekwe in the Midlands province.

The presence of Western election monitors for the first time in years is an indicator of a freer political environment, though concerns have been raised about state media bias toward the ruling party as well as a lack of transparency with the printing of ballot papers.

Mnangagwa also called on "citizens and candidates alike to exercise responsibility and restraint by patiently waiting" for official results.

Nelson Chamisa's MDC Alliance has been warned "to safeguard victory" after the party announced victory before official confirmation from ZEC.

Elections under Mugabe were marred by systematic fraud and often deadly violence but campaigning was relatively unrestricted and peaceful.

The new government will face mass unemployment and an economy shattered by the seizure of white-owned farms under Mugabe, the collapse of agriculture, hyperinflation and an investment exodus.

Mr Mugabe was ousted in a bloodless coup in November and has refused to recognise Mr Mnangagwa's government after the political candidate assumed power.
