One call was very specific and dire: A woman said an intruder was breaking into her home in the middle of the night.

The release said officers "arrived to a very chaotic and violent scene" and heard gunshots inside the home. An officer shot an armed man police encountered - and that man turned out to be a resident of the home, the Post added.

The officer who shot the resident of the home has been placed on standard paid leave.

The man, later determined to be the homeowner, was transported to the hospital, where he died from his wounds. Officials say the intruder was found dead on the bathroom floor.

An injured juvenile was also found near the scene of the intruder's shooting, and taken to a local hospital for serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Aurora Police said their investigation revealed the resident shot and killed the intruder prior to police coming inside the home.

The Denver Police Department is assisting with the investigation, Aurora police spokesperson Kenneth Forrest said. "We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very hard time", Metz said.

KDVR reports police were called to a home early Monday morning after receiving a call about an intruder.

The flurry of emergency calls went out to the Aurora Police Department yesterday, advising authorities that there was something wrong on a tree-lined street in the Colorado city.

The armed man, however, was identified as Richard "Gary" Black Jr.by Siddhartha Rathod, a lawyer representing his family's estate. The police department said it would be holding a news conference later this week to give more information about the incident.

Forrest declined to address questions, citing the district attorney's request to withhold facts as the investigation continues.
