"The western edge of fire continued to challenge crews yesterday evening", Cal Fire said Wednesday. By Wednesday afternoon, containment was at 35 percent. The feline and hen were found Saturday huddling together on the front porch of a home in Redding during a firefighters' patrol through a fire-damaged neighborhood.

"Over a decade or so, we're going to have more fire, more destructive fire, more billions that will have to be spent on it", said Gov.

Meanwhile, firefighters were engaged in a pitched battle to contain at least 19 major wildfires that have claimed at least six lives and charred hundreds of square miles in recent weeks.

As of Thursday, there were 18 wildfires burning across the state.

California governor Jerry Brown said the wildfire season was the "new normal" for the state.

Tired firefighters in Northern California were outflanking a deadly, 10-day-old blaze on Wednesday that has destroyed over 1,000 homes as authorities reopened more evacuated neighbourhoods and the last few people listed as missing were found alive.

The largest blaze burned in the Redding area, in Shasta County north of Sacramento.

Whale Dolphin Hybrid Discovered Off The Coast Of Hawaii
Scientists are touting the first sighting of a hybrid between a melon-headed whale and a rough-toothed dolphin off Hawaii . The hybrid, named Kekaimalu, still lives at the marine mammal park, where she helps teach children about genetics.

However, authorities who had feared there might be more casualties reported Wednesday that all those who had been reported missing had been located.

"A factor that folks in that area, crews in that area are aware of and they're looking at that and a potential for spot fires across their lines", said Gabe Lauderdale with Cal Fire.

A 160-square-kilometre fire near Yosemite National Park prompted evacuation orders Wednesday for the community of Wawona inside the park, which has fewer than 200 residents.

The fire is believed to have been started by a malfunctioning auto on July 23.

Residents in the area of mile marker two on south Highway 101 Hopland, east to the Mendocino and Lake County line and south to Mendocino and Sonoma County line, should be ready to evacuate the area as soon as necessary.

Fire officials said such blazes had been fuelled by several years of drought-dessicated vegetation, and stoked by frequent and persistent bouts of erratic winds and triple-digit temperatures.
