The meeting was attended by the president's son as well as Paul Manafort, then chairman of Trump's presidential campaign; Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner; and several Russians, including the lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, and their representatives.

But the president's opponents say the tweet Sunday morning contradicts his earlier statements, which had said the meeting at Trump Tower focused on Russian adoptions.

Trump's admission through Twitter on Sunday about the goal behind the 2016 Trump Tower meeting was the latest step in the long-evolving story from Trump, Trump Jr. and the President's legal team.

All jokes aside, Giuliani was actually denying that he has been sweating bullets over Trump's tweets, despite recent reports that the president should be more concerned about the things he tweets.

One of Mr Trump's lawyers, Jay Sekulow, said on Sunday that the meeting had nor broken any laws.

"There are federal statutes that prohibit receiving something of value from a foreign national, foreign entity, or foreign government", he continued.

But "willfully soliciting a foreign contribution is a crime", Rick Hasen, a campaign finance expert and law professor at the University of California, Irvine, said in an email Monday.

It is common for USA politicians to research their opponents during a campaign.

"Let's be honest with the American people, there are irregularities in this investigation, the likes of which we have not seen", Sekulow added later.

The two sides have been at an impasse since March, when Mueller raised the threat of issuing a subpoena to the president, and Trump's team has sought to make Trump's conduct as president off-limits to Mueller's investigators, should an interview occur.

Sekulow acknowledged that the public explanation for the meeting has changed but insisted that the White House has been very clear with the special counsel's office. "You know that's not the premise that got them in the room and then they started it was essentially a bait and switch to talk about that, and everyone has basically said that in testimony already".

Unhappily for the Times, as it own story admits, its first paragraph - and others like it elsewhere - doesn't say anything new.

Adam Schiff of California, top Democrat on the house intelligence committee, said on Twitter: "The Russians offered damaging info on your opponent". This was later retracted after details emerged about why Junior had agreed to meet with the Russians.

"None of this is normal or credible".

It comes at a time when Trump is increasingly lashing out and seeking to undermine Mueller's investigation. "And I fear that the message that the Kremlin cares most about is what they hear from Donald Trump, and that is still one of denial and cover for the Russians". It started with The New York Times reporting on the existence of this meeting. Dowd subsequently resigned from the Trump team. He went on to distance himself from Trump Jr. and the meeting: "I did not know about it!"

His comments were part of a broader Twitter rant Sunday, which also included a tweet falsely claiming the press "purposely cause great division & distrust". But also, they didn't give us anything good, and we didn't act on it.

He called the "Fake" media "very unsafe and sick".
