Trump Touts Iran Sanctions

Hassan Rouhani and Donald Trump Hassan Rouhani and Donald Trump are at loggerhead following the US leader's sanctions

Responding to Mr. Trump's comments, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said that Washington's call for new nuclear negotiations at the same time the USA reimposes crippling sanctions "makes no sense".

European allies said they "deeply regret" the United States action.

Trump said he was open to reaching a more comprehensive deal with Iran "that addresses the full range of the regime´s malign activities, including its ballistic missile program and its support for terrorism".

Trump government officials blame the nuclear deal signed under former president Barack Obama for providing the revenue for Iran to fund its regional activities.

European Union diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini said the bloc, as well as Britain, France and Germany, deeply regretted the move by Washington.

Most Iranians have tuned out the endless USA hostility, with which they have lived for four decades, so their anger is mostly directed at their own leaders.

"The chilling effect of these sanctions has already taken its toll on the Iranian economy, so the sky will not fall at midnight tonight", he told The National.

Most Iranians see U.S. hostility as a basic fact of life, so their frustration is largely directed at their own leaders for not handling the situation better.

Trump renewed his attack on the worldwide nuclear pact, calling it "a awful, one-sided deal" that "failed to achieve the fundamental objective of blocking all paths to an Iranian nuclear bomb", while giving it "a lifeline of cash" when earlier sanctions were lifted.

"If the ayatollahs want to get out from under the squeeze, they should come and sit down".

Rouhani said that Trump's call for direct negotiations with Iran were "only for domestic consumption in America. and to create chaos in Iran".

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, in a speech broadcast on state television, said the United States can not be trusted because it withdrew from the global pact, whose other signatories still support it.

He dismissed a USA call for talks, saying "we are always in favour of diplomacy and talks..."

"This is an important moment for Israel, the USA, the region and the entire world", Netanyahu said.

The impact of the return of sanctions has ramped up tensions inside Iran, which has seen days of protests and strikes in multiple towns and cities over water shortages, high prices and wider anger at the political system.

Iran took a series of measures to try to limit the effect of U.S. sanctions on their economy over the weekend. "That's the ask. It's pretty simple", said Pompeo, en route Sunday from a three-nation trip to Southeast Asia.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, like Trump a long-time opponent of the accord, congratulated him on the new sanctions.

It sets out to allow firms to recover damages from bodies that enforce United States sanctions - and bans companies from complying with USA sanctions without European Union permission.

"No Iranian politician can risk negotiating with the president who trashed the outcome of 12 years of negotiations over the nuclear issue and can't come to any lasting agreement with his own party and US's traditional allies", he said.

And EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini has gone further by urging European businesses to do their bit to save the Iran nuclear deal by boosting trade with the country.
