It was the second fire to break records in the fire-prone, most populous U.S. state in as many years, following the Thomas Fire in December 2017, which stood at 281,893 acres.

A total of almost 3,900 people were fighting the Mendocino Complex Fire, including crews from Arizona, Washington and Alaska.

While no casualties have yet been reported, the fires which have been raging throughout Northern California since July 27, have already destroyed 75 residences and are now threatening another 11,300 structures.

Nationwide on wildfires 558 hand crews, 186 helicopters, and 1,907 fire engines are assigned on wildfires, for a total 28,234 personnel including overhead and other firefighting resources.

"There are also significant terrain hazards for firefighters". That doesn't happen. That just doesn't happen, ' he said. It has already destroyed 75 homes and threatens 9,300 structures. It has burned through 225,000 acres - almost twice its size on Friday. It was 45 percent contained.

Firefighters are unlikely to see some respite. "Everything is still dry".

For the period from January 1 through July 29, 2018, there were 3,770 California wildfires.

The Mendocino Complex fire has become the largest wildfire in California history.

Officials said Monday that the flames about 100 miles north of San Francisco grew to 283,800 acres.

It's killed seven people, including two firefighters who were helping residents evacuate from the affected area. "It is being diverted into the Pacific Ocean", Trump wrote.

Experts have said this has meant fires spreading more quickly from rural areas to urban developments.

A day later he posted another tweet about water being "diverted", and he said Gov. Trump contended Monday that water could be used for "fires, farming and everything else".

Hundreds of colleagues, family and friends attended a memorial service Saturday in Fresno for National Forest Service Capt. Brian Hughes.

The water debate taps into a deep-seeded controversy in California: the balance between letting water flow through streams and redirecting it for agriculture and other uses.

In an unrelated long-running dispute, farmers have demanded more water to irrigate crops for years, while environmentalists say diverting more water to crops would kill off fish stock and hurt rivers.

Hurley said some temperatures could reach 43 C in Northern California over the next few days with 24 km/h winds fanning the flames. It was 38 percent contained.

President Donald Trump responded to the devastation on Sunday in a tweet that was met with backlash because it appeared to place blame on poor environmental laws rather than climate change. As Trump alluded to in his tweet, experts have urged state and federal forestry officials to move quickly in clearing swathes of dead forests due to their added fire danger.

Containing the California wildfires is becoming increasingly more hard.

With several major wildfires burning across California, officials suggested they would decide where to deploy the extra firefighters once they arrived.

Evan Westrup, Brown's spokesman, said the president's tweets do not "merit a response".

Trump on Sunday morning announced that a major disaster exists in California, paving the way for federal money and aid.

Firefighters from Australia and New Zealand are scheduled to arrive in Northern California today to help battle two huge blazes that were about half contained over the weekend.
