Despite the applause and gasps from the crowd, as well as his opponent, Federer appeared as cool and calm as ever as he flashed a small smile and walked back to the end of the court ready to commence play again. "Millman's first top ten victory lands him a spot in the QF against Djokovic", tweeted US Open's official Twitter handle. I think I really found my serve.

Djokovic argued with the umpire in the third set too.

Roger Federer of Switzerland reacts during a changeover in a fourth round match against John Millman of Australia on day eight of the 2018 U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Definitely a player I've looked up to throughout my career.

The biggest concern for Djokovic might well have been the conditions as the heat returned to NY after a few days of relief.

The 31-year-old Serb, who also left the course for a medical evaluation as he suffered in the conditions, could meet Federer if the Swiss can overcome Australian John Millman on Tuesday.

The 13-times Grand Slam victor had made easy work of the opening set, breaking Sousa twice, the second time to close out set.

'But I got out of a tough second set and really found my feed, chose to be a little bit more aggressive.

The 29-year-old Australian had never competed in the fourth round of a Grand Slam prior to this year's event but took his opportunity with both hands as he took out the 20-time major victor 3-6 7-5 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3).

Federer broke first on the way to a 5-3 lead in the set, but Millman won the last four games, breaking Federer twice.

Luka Modric named UEFA player of year
This season kicks off a new three-year cycle of broadcasting and sponsor deals that have raised prize money to record levels. Juventus were drawn against Ronaldo's former side Manchester United, Valencia and Young Boys for this season's competition.

But that only delayed the inevitable as Nishikori kept his focus to seal the win and extend his flawless record against the German to 3-0.

Yet that break was immediately cancelled out, the animated Millman again demonstrating his character as he got back on level terms.

"I'm probably in a little bit of disbelief", said Millman.

The other quarterfinal on the bottom half of the draw will be 2014 runner-up Kei Nishikori against 2014 champion Marin Cilic or No. 10 David Goffin.

It's only the second time in Federer's past 14 appearances at the US Open that he has lost before the quarterfinals.

Should 20-time major victor Federer get through against the 55th-ranked Australian, he'll set up his earliest Grand Slam meeting with Djokovic since 2007, when Federer beat the Serb star to reach the Australian Open quarter- finals. Osaka had won 22 consecutive games leading into the match, but was tested by Sabalenka, who double-faulted on match point.

Millman, ranked 55 in the world, will now face sixth seed Novak Djokovic in the US Open Quarters.

The first obvious signs of trouble for Federer came far earlier, in the second game of the second set. Suarez Navarro let the 22nd-seeded Sharapova create her own problems.

It was his first victory against a top 10 player. Credit to Joao for fighting, he brought a lot of intensity on the court. "He was playing great, hitting the ball very, very strong", he said.
