Thiem: Nadal defeat will stick in my mind forever

Order of play Day 7 Serena and Nadal resume title quests Rafael Nadal vs Dominic Thiem: US Open quarterfinal preview and prediction
Tamara Craig | 06 September, 2018, 02:32

Rafael Nadal vs. Dominic Thiem went on long into the small hours, with Nadal eventually prevailing in a pulsating deciding-set tiebreak.

In the end, the top-seeded and defending champion Nadal moved into the U.S. Open semifinals with an 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 win over Thiem in what was a rematch of this year's French Open final.

However, the 32-year-old was fortunate to triumph on another hot and humid night at Flushing Meadows, 24 hours after Roger Federer had been dumped out of the tournament by John Millman.

Post-match Nadal said that "suffering" was the "right word" to describe the 4 hour, 48 minute match.

"I told myself "wake up", said Nadal. Thiem's power off both flanks is what had ultimately undone Nadal on clay on those two occasions and seemed like it would prevail in their first hard-court meeting on Tuesday evening as the Austrian stormed to 6-0 in the opening set in mere 24 minutes.

Serving for the match, the Latvian raced out to triple match point and although Stephens saved two of them, Sevastova sealed the win when the 25-year-old American pushed a backhand into the net. The fourth was an 81-minute rollercoaster ride, where Nadal came within two points of winning only for Thiem to take the tie-break.

Perhaps Thiem, after a change of socks and shoes, looked the fresher going into the decider but he needed to save two break points at 2-2, one with an ace, to maintain parity. But now I wish him the title the most, that's for sure.

"Yeah, of course, I played a lot of long and tough matches in my career". It ended up in the fifth set tiebreaker, there it's 50/50.

When is Rafael Nadal vs Dominic Thiem on and what time does it start?

"In the first set I only won seven points, I hadn't started and it could've been very unpleasant".

Thiem - with his girlfriend and fellow tennis player Kristina Mladenovic watching from the stands where Hollywood star Ben Stiller was also present - played well, however, Nadal was just too good as he executed the third of three set points on his opponent's serve to claim the momentum. "That's one more today", he said after his 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/5) win. "Forever I'm going to remember this match, for sure".

Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion seeking a first major since a 2017 Australian Open title won when she was pregnant with her daughter Olympia, will take on Karolina Pliskova for a semi-final spot after the eighth-seeded Czech beat Australian Ashleigh Barty 6-4, 6-4.

"We fought the whole match and I survived with my serve which was key".

Nadal will face 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro next, with the 2009 champion having outslugged John Isner 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-6 (4-7), 6-2 to reach the last four.

"I had a shower, lay on the table and I didn't want to come back again".

Del Potro's victory was no walk in the park either, the Argentinian battling through strength-sapping heat and humidity to win 6-7 (5/7) 6-3 7-6 (7/4) 6-2.
