Trump escalates attacks on his attorney general

Trump calls out Sessions over indictments Donald Trump hits out at Attorney General Jeff Sessions in long-running feud

In the ongoing saga between Attorney General Jeff Sessions and President Donald Trump, a group of Southern, Republican Senators are stepping out in defense of their longtime colleague, Sessions.

Trump went after Sessions in a string of tweets on Monday, accusing him of jeopardizing Republican chances in November's midterm elections with a series of Justice Department investigations.

In a second tweet, Trump said Democrats "must love" Sessions and likened the situation to Democrats support for former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump fired past year.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-California, and Rep. Chris Collins, R-New York, were indicted within two weeks of each other last month on unrelated charges. Hunter was charged with using campaign funds for personal use. Both have proclaimed their innocence, but Collins has dropped out of his race.

Collins has suspended his reelection campaign, while Hunter is running for reelection, alleging political bias by the Justice Department.

The tweet marked Trump's latest attack on the Justice Department, which has a long history of carrying out investigations and pursuing indictments in a nonpartisan fashion.

In the tweet, Trump explicitly denounced the Justice Department for bringing charges based on thorough investigations. For the president of the United States to say, 'don't prosecute Republicans, only prosecute democrats, ' - I was a prosecutor for eight years.

Bernard parishes, primarily along the Industrial Canal and susceptible to high-tide conditions if not closed, the city said. Gordon has begun hurling tropical storm-force winds onshore along the Alabama and western Florida Panhandle coastline.

Of course, Toobin's hypothetical is a totally different situation, mainly since Trump wasn't recommending that Sessions or anyone else in the Justice Department cease what they're now doing.

Geoffrey Berman, acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY, oversaw the indictment last month of Collins on charges of insider trading.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions plans to meet with state attorneys general this month to discuss whether social media companies are stifling free expression, according to a statement released today. Not long after that, Sessions submitted a resignation letter to the White House, but Trump's senior aides persuaded him not to accept it. Lindsey Graham of SC told reporters recently.

Sessions recently pushed back, saying publicly that he will not allow political manipulation of the department. Trump's comments make it clear that he sees his office as "above the law, which directly undermines the ancient principle of rule of law, that the law applies without fear or favor, and no one is above it".

Trump's long-simmering anger stems from Sessions' decision to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation.

It's hard - amid all of the norm-busting that Trump has done since he announced for president in June 2015 - to register any real shock over anything he says or tweets these days.

The Fox analyst said it seemed inappropriate for Trump to weigh in and say the DOJ should not be investigating his congressional allies because it could hurt the party in the midterm elections.
